The Hamingway
Putting together resources to make your hamster journey easier
We adopted Hammond Hamilton Hamingway on February 25, 2020 and we thought we were well prepared. At the time, we had everything the hamster organization we were a part of said we needed for the adoption process and a lot more. However, once we were really a part of the community, we realized that there were so many things we didn’t know and so many different ways of practising Hamster Care around the world.
We wanted to find the best way to take care of our hamster and from a lot of research and interacting with different people we decided to compile our findings and share them as there is no one size fits all to being a pet parent. The information was out there, but there was no easy way to see everything displayed all at once.
And so, the Hamingway was born.
Hammond Hamilton Hamingway, or “Hammy” for short, is a winter white hybrid that we adopted on February 25th, 2020. He was born on January 17th, 2020 and was part of an accidental litter.
For the first few months of his life, Hammy lived in an enclosure that was far too small. Though it met our club’s requirements for adoption, it wasn’t enough for him and it showed. We did a lot of research and Hammy now lives in a custom enclosure that measures 130 x 55 cm (or 51 x 22 in) . Although the enclosure seems pretty big now, we are always looking the possibilities of upgrading.
Hammy’s current food is the Rodipet Hybrid Dwarf Mix, with protein supplemented in the form of mealworms and dehydrated chicken. We are still looking into trying other mixes!
We will always do our best to ensure that we can provide Hammy with the best care possible.
